Customs and Tax History Museum

The museum was founded in 2008 by the Department of Customs and Taxes of Riga Technical University (RTU) in cooperation with the State Revenue Service (SRS) on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia. The museum is an educational and research institution available to the public. The museum collects and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage of Latvian history of customs and taxes from earlier times to today.

The exhibition “Taxes and Customs in Latvia” demonstrates:

• the oldest types of payments and procedures for collecting them;
• the tax and customs system of the Republic of Latvia from 1918 to 1940;
• the tax and customs system from 1940 to 1990;
• the tax and customs system, collection of duties in the Republic of Latvia after the restoration of the independence;
• examples of excise goods and history of smuggling.

The exhibition includes historical documents of different times, a collection of customs uniforms in Latvia and other historic items.

The tasks of the museum are to conduct scientific research, offer thematic tours, prepare and deliver lectures. Introductory lectures for the RTU students of the study course of “Introduction to Specialty” are organized at the museum.

The Customs and Tax History Museum of Riga Technical University (RTU) is located in the building of the RTU Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management.
